A Personal Note

Super Start is not the product of big business, a big university or a big foundation. Large sacks of grant money do not show up in the mailbox every day (or even every other day). It is, I will believe until the day I die, a response to a calling. I don't claim it's been a timely response or the best response but, finally, a response. It started in 1987 when I started reading disturbing literacy statistics for this country. I'm afraid they haven't changed much since then. At about the same time, I started noticing reports on research findings about how incredibly capable very young children and even infants are at learning. At about the same time, I took a C-language programming class.

That's enough "at about the same time"s to inform just about anybody that things had gone beyond conincidence to Godincidence. Too dumb to know what was going on however, I didn't really respond until I had a heart attack and a quadruple bypass in 1995. I was watching TV in the hospital room when something came over me like a warm blanket. There were no words, but the message was unmistakable: "I gave you a job, and I just wanted to let you know that you have only so much time on this earth to get it done, so get off your back-side and do it!" Needless to say, some software was written and this site was put together.

It is my hope and prayer that religious groups, youth groups, civic clubs, businesses and individuals will hear the same calling and set up local Super Start Projects so that this can truly become a gift to all of our children.

Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.

Matthew 25:40
