The Super Start Project

Finding Settings For A Sound Card

This will hopefully help you find the settings for a sound card in Windows, then set it up for Super Start:

Step 1: Get into DOS (go to Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt), then type in the following:
set <enter>
(<enter> means press the enter key)
This command will display various settings in the computer. You might see something like this, although systems will vary a lot:

TMP=c:\windows\TEMP
TEMP=C:\windows\TEMP
PROMPT=$p$g
winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
CLASSPATH=C:\Program Files\PhotoDeluxe 2.0\AdobeConnectables
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND;C:\VXIPNP\WIN95\BIN;C:\CVI;C:\PACIFIC\BIN
VXIPNPPATH=C:\VXIPNP
MSTUDIO_CPP_PATH=C:\MeasurementStudio\VC
MSTUDIO_CPP_VXIPNP_PATH=C:\VXIPNP\Win95
CL=/DNI_VISA_INSTALLED
windir=C:\WINDOWS
BLASTER=A240 I5 D1 T4
CMDLINE=ftp www.learn-c.com

Write down the settings for BLASTER if it exists.

Step 2: Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel then click on Control Panel.

Step 3: Double click on the System icon.

Step 4: Click on Device Manager then on the "+" of Sound, video and game controllers to expand its listing. You should see something similar to the following if you have a sound card. Double click on the one that talks about Sound Blaster or something similar.

Step 5: Click on Resources. You should see the port address, interrupt request number and direct memory access channel number. These will tell you the settings to use for the BLASTER environmental variable in autoexec.bat. For example, the following calls for the entry in autoexec to be:
set BLASTER=240 D1
You might find additional settings elsewhere, but Super Start only needs the port number and the direct memory access channel number.

Use a text editor to add the appropriate BLASTER variables to the autoexec.bat file in the root directory of your drive. Reboot (Start/Shutdown/Restart). Get into DOS (Start/ Programs/MS-DOS Prompt), then type in the following:
set <enter>
The BLASTER variable should now show the entries you have made for it.

You will need two of the test programs for the following. You have them if you have downloaded super100.zip and/or test.exe. If you only downloaded super100.exe, you need to download test.exe to get the test programs. See the Download Page to get the files.

Get into DOS, then type in
cd\super\test <enter>
Now type in
whatport <enter>

You should see that the program found BLASTER and decoded its settings.

Type in
sweep <enter>
You will hopefully hear a sweeped audio signal out of the speaker(s). If not, press the enter key to end the program. If that doesn't work, press ctrl-alt-del, find sweep then click end task and any other buttons needed to terminate the program. Super Start will probably not work in this environment if sweep doesn't work.

If it does work, start Super Start and see if it works.

If all else fails, find an old DOS 386 somewhere for $20 and an old sound card. That shouldn't be too hard to do since it's estimated that there are about 15 million older systems gatering dust in attics and warehouses around the country. That's why Super Start was designed to work with such systems.
